MISSIONARIES CALL FOR PEACE

MISSIONARIES CALL FOR PEACE By: SEDOS members 2025 From June 16th to 20th missionaries from all continents, members of Congregational Leadership Teams, missiology students, some preparing for their final perpetual commitment in the Religious Missionary Life, came together at the Centro Ad Gentes, Nemi, in the Roman hills, to reflect on the specific missionary call emerging from the Church’s current path of renewal and reform: synodality. Three days reflecting on the theme: “Missionary Institutes and Synodality: Charism, Prophesy, and Witness” renewed the sense of commitment to furthering synodality within and among different missionary Institutes. Internal renewal of processes and structures goes hand in hand with the missionary commitment to be a witnessing presence, bringing God’s love to the peripheries of our world, not just the geographical but to the existential peripheries: the mystery of sin, of pain, of injustice, of ignorance and indifference to religion, of intellectual currents, and of all misery.] [1] Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, 2013.  At the end of the seminar, the group issued the following Statement re-echoing Pope Leo’s calls for peace in the world. Statement from the SEDOS Residential Seminar 2025 We, seventy missionaries from thirty Missionary Institutes, representing thirty-two nationalities across all continents, lay men and women, religious brothers, sisters and priests, gathered in the serene and spiritually resonant setting of Centro Ad Gentes in Nemi, outside Rome, for the 2025 SEDOS Residential Seminar. Our shared time together was a profound witness to the Church’s intercultural, international and intergenerational richness and to the possibility of [...]

Pope Leo XIV: Creation Is a Gift, Not a Battleground

Pope Leo XIV: Creation Is a Gift, Not a Battleground As the Church prepares to celebrate the Tenth World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on 1 September 2025, Pope Leo XIV invites us to see the Earth not as a battleground for resources, but as God’s precious gift entrusted to our care. In his message titled “Seeds of Peace and Hope”, released on 2 July, the Pope echoes the vision of Laudato si’, reminding us that environmental and social justice are not separate concerns—they are deeply connected. He warns that greed, inequality, and exploitation are driving the destruction of both people and the planet, especially harming the poor and indigenous communities. Pope Leo laments that creation has become a “bargaining chip,” where land, water, and life itself are sacrificed for profit and power. Instead, we are called to “till and keep” the Earth with care and reverence. He reminds us that caring for creation is a matter of faith. The universe reflects the face of Christ, and to protect it is to honour our Creator. Pointing to projects like Borgo Laudato Si’, the Pope encourages us to plant “seeds of justice” that will one day bear the fruits of peace and renewal. This journey takes time, but with love, cooperation, and trust in God, it is possible. He concludes with a prayer that the Spirit may renew the Earth and guide us along the path of integral ecology—a path of hope for all. Read the full message [...]

Jubilee Celebrations in the Province of Benin – June 2025

Jubilee Celebrations in the Province of Benin – June 2025 In a joyful spirit of thanksgiving, OLA in the Province of Benin gives thanks to God for the recent celebrations of the Silver Jubilee of the religious life of (Srs. Marie-Victoire ZOUMAROU & Felicia NWOSU) and the Diamond Jubilee of two other Sisters (Srs. Jeanne d’Arc AYITE & Marie-Edwige HOUNZA). These milestones, marked with deep gratitude and joy, are a witness to the grace of God and the faithful commitment of our Sisters to a life of service and mission. The celebration holds special meaning as it unfolds during the Jubilee Year of the Church and the SMA/OLA Family Jubilee, reminding us of God’s faithfulness through generations and across continents. The jubilarians’ lives are powerful witnesses to the Gospel, lived out in simplicity, audacity, and missionary zeal. Their years of service—whether in pastoral care, education, healthcare, formation, or missionary outreach—have touched countless lives and inspired hope in communities far and near. As an international congregation, we, the OLA Sisters, join in heartfelt congratulations to our beloved jubilarians. We thank God for their lives of prayer, love, and prophetic presence in the world. Let us also pray fervently for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. May the witness of these jubilarians encourage young people to hear and respond generously to God’s call, just as they did. Congratulations, dear Sisters! Ad multos annos!
