Congratulations to Fr. Augustin Placide Houessinon, New Provincial Superior of the SMA Province of Lyon

With joy and gratitude, the OLA Sisters congratulate Rev. Fr. Augustin Placide Houessinon on his election as the Provincial Superior of the Society of African Missions (SMA), Lyon Province, during the 18th Provincial Assembly held at the peaceful Cartières of Chaponost.
Fr. Houessinon, a native of the Republic of Benin, becomes the first African SMA to hold this position in the history of the Lyon Province — a profoundly symbolic sign that speaks to the SMA’s growing intercultural character and growing missionary identity.

This significant election follows the recent 2025 SMA General Assembly in Rome, where Fr. François de Penhoat, former Provincial of Lyon, was elected Superior General of the SMA.

The Assembly was marked by deep reflection, synodal listening, and discernment — enriched by voices like Sr. Marie Hélène Robert, OLA; Fr. Paul Ennin; and ethnologist Valérie Aubourg. Themes of generosity, mission in a changing France, and prophetic witness set the tone for this pivotal gathering.

As Fr. Augustin steps into this role, we pray God’s abundant grace upon him and the entire Provincial Council. May they lead with faith, courage, and hope — building communion across cultures, and living out the mission with compassion and prophetic vision.

Congratulations, Fr. Augustin! May your leadership be a blessing to the Lyon Province and to the entire SMA family
