The Glorious Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today, 15th August, the Church joyfully celebrates the glorious Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, into heaven. But what does this mystery mean for us?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (No. 966) explains:
“Finally, the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.”
The Assumption is not simply a privilege granted to Mary alone—it is a sign of hope for all believers. In Mary, we see the first fruits of Christ’s victory over sin and death. Her Assumption is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection promised to all Christians.
This feast invites us to lift our eyes to heaven, where Mary, our Mother, intercedes for us as Queen and Advocate. It also calls us to live with faith, purity, and love, so that we too may share in the glory of eternal life.
As we honour Mary today, we entrust ourselves and our world to her maternal care.
Prayer for Peace and Protection
O Mary, Assumed into heaven,
Queen of Peace and Mother of the Church,
we place ourselves under your loving protection.
Intercede for our world torn by conflict,
that peace may reign in every heart and nation.
Shield us from all harm,
and guide us safely to your Son,
who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
